Barker Reacts to Stellenbosch’s First Trophy Win
Coach Steve Barker is over the moon after leading Stellenbosch FC to victory over TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup on Saturday, 16 December.
Playing against Galaxy at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, the Cape Winelands outfit – which was established in 2016 – added their first major piece of silverware to their trophy cabinet following a 5-4 penalty shoot-out.
In the post-match press conference, an emotional Barker expressed his happiness, excitement and more about this major milestone.
“It’s difficult to describe the feeling I have, and it’s just been a journey of hard work, dedication and commitment to my career and what I do,” the 55-year-old remarked. “To get this trophy in the bag as a coach … [and] to be where we are now is a good space to be in.
“But for us as coaches, a few months down the line, we could be under pressure again. So, when we do win things like we did today, we must enjoy it – and I’m definitely going to enjoy it.”
Thanking his family, club staff and fans, Barker also praised his players: “They deserve it. They put in shift after shift, week in and week out … so credit must go to them.”
